Went for lunch today with two friends and didn't pay a cent. Not even for transport, because I got a car ride to and fro. Woot.
And I know that I'll have a ride home each time I go out with them, because both of them drive :P Even if we go out with our other mutual friends, I would still be able to get a ride home, maybe even to the venue itself. Woot.
The beauty of having older working friends with cars. xP *gloat gloat*
Lunch was chicken rice at Changi Village, followed by escargot (yes I know...I'll explain later) and ice cream at Bark's Cafe beside the Changi Chapel and Museum.
According to my friend, the church was built during WW2 and is now a place of commemoration for the POWs of that time. It's a heritage site I think. I was really quite touched when I stepped in. I recognised a picture of a POW from my History textbook, that a POW reduced to skin and bones, but with a genuine, open smile on his face. I remember how that picture struck me so many years back - how could a man in that situation still smile like that?
There were letters and postcards from relatives and friends of POWs of that time. One said, "Uncle Keith, you were a POW in Australia. I remember you were always kind to me..." I can't remember the rest, but it was in a child's handwriting.
We went into the chapel briefly, where a guide was talking about the murals on the wall. They had no paints back then, so the guy commissioned to paint the murals had to make brushes out of human hair. Blue paint was made by crushing billiard chalks. Brown paint was taken from the military, which used it to repair military vehicles. I would have loved to stay for the whole of her talk, but one of my friends had to be back home early for some builders, so we left.
Now, the escargot. (No pics, because these are relatively new friends and I thought it might be a bit odd whipping out my handphone all the time for pictures.) Basically we ordered it because one of them had never had escargot before and actually was afraid of eating it because he used to kill snails when he was young...haha. He said it was good though, although the idea of eating a snail was still rather icky. And it was good, although the texture of it takes getting used to. A bit like crunchy prawn. Smothered in buttery cream sauce with tomatoes and olives...mmmm.
My other friend made them serve the escargot before the ice cream (our original intention of going to the cafe) so that he wouldn't be able to claim he was too full to try the escargot! Hehe.
Really enjoyed myself today, and really not just because I didn't have to pay. Really glad to have made these new friends, and the idea that we live so near each other (all in Pasir Ris) is nice. The Pasir Ris Gang! Suddenly Pasir Ris seems a lot smaller and cozier. Plans have been made to visit one of their houses next week, and I'm looking forward to it. =D |
