Australian Professor Caught Out by Undergrads

A Monash University professor was found to have published an incorrect formula in student course material yesterday. The mistake was picked out by several students from the Singapore campus.

The mistake concerned the position of the square root in the formula. The students realised that something was amiss when they got unexpected results using the incorrect formula.

“The formula to find the z for Assignment one is it square root the whole thing or square root the denominator?” asked a student on the Psychology forum.

“Square root of the whole thing,” replied Dr Granville ‘Grumpy’ Highman*.

However, the students later found a textbook in which the correct formula was listed. Only the denominator was square-rooted.

The students, who declined to be named, have notified their local tutor about the problem. Another student emailed Highman directly. What remains now for them is to wait.

“It’s kind of nice to think that for once, you’re smarter than your professor,” Student A said.

“You get bragging rights,” said Student B, “but what we really really want is an extension for our assignment.”

Highman could not be reached for comment at press time.

*Name changed to protect the...guilty?

*chortles* Sheep E-Times, Sheepie Times, geddit?? Ok, this is entirely tongue-in-cheek, but also entirely true. The quotes are exactly as they said it, save those of Students A and B, which were paraphrased a little. But I don't think they will mind so much, right Student A?? I'm sure Student B doesn't - since she is yours truly.

The whole incident is just too amusing not to blog and since KM has been bugging me to do so...

In my usual long-winded style, there would have been about 1000 words here, but I've managed to summarised everything nicely in less than 200 words, 'hard news' style. Eee, if only I could submit this for my journalism assignment!!

I am still waiting for my extension. Thank You in advance Daddy!

Grumpy isn't really Highman's middle name, of course; just a nickname someone came up with. I think we're ingenious at nicknames for teachers (although some are not very nice indeed xP): Grumpy, Superman, Mama Cow, Contrary... I came up with the Superman one, I like it! Lol.

Don't you think Highman is a really interesting family name? Let's just say I've only changed the spelling of it...can you imagine, an entire family of Highmans? Well, maybe you'd better not. xP

School has been extremely interesting lately. :)
