(haha, funny url...moOoLA!! Gimme moOoLA!!!)

I really like this song now! It's the ending theme song of the movie Curse of the Golden Flower, in which Jay Chou plays the son of Gong Li. The movie was no exceptional stuff except in the extravagant, lavish sets and costumes, the miles of exposed cleavage (as you can see from the video, which contains footage from the movie), and the degree of dysfunctionality in the royal family of the story (and you thought a dysfunctional family was a modern concept!).

I like this song for both its music and its lyrics, but particularly its lyrics, because they're so poignantly beautiful. They were written by this person called Vincent Fang Wen Shan (not Jay Chou himself as I mistakenly thought), who's written many other songs for the singer. I only realised this the other day when I went to KBox with Bizhu (Adrielle)! I like most of the other songs he's written because of the lyrics as well (七里香发如雪珊瑚海千里之外).

There's this particular line that made me think for a long time about what it meant: 徒留我孤单在湖面 / 成双。Very roughly translated, it says something about being left alone on the lake and pairing up. I kept wondering: pairing up with who? How can you pair up with anything when you're alone? Then it hit me: of course! The lyrics were referring to the reflection of the protagonist on the lake's surface! Duhh.

I've always thought that Chinese songs in general, whether secular or Christian, are more beautiful than English ones. Maybe it's the nature of the language itself, in the way each word can be so pregnant with meaning, in the way one could produce a different nuance or shade of meaning simply by exchanging one word for another. Or maybe it's simply because the language is truly my mother tongue (even though I read, speak and write in English a lot more), the language of the people of my colour.

I used to like Jay Chou a lot, too, until his third album, when I felt he was becoming way too commercialised. Not sure which album he is at now, but I have to say, still; the man is undeniably talented. I also used to think he was really good-looking xP

Anyway, so much for that, I better go and sleep already! :P
