Speaking of campaigns... |
Let me just talk about the other two in my sidebar. STAND UP addresses America's shocking education crisis. I first heard about it on Oprah. It really is shocking! We all think America is very advanced, but unfortunately, their education system is lagging far behind. The physical state of some high schools is just terrible. Holes in the wall, broken toilets and windows never repaired, peeling paint hanging everywhere....like something out of a third world country. Not to mention the inadequate academic preparation provided by some schools, leaving many graduates unprepared for the next stage of education and eventually dropping out of school altogether.
I get goosebumps just thinking about it. And I think it's really sad because here in Singapore most of us take education for granted...we even complain about it and all. I used to do that myself. But then I almost lost a chance for further education and that's why I value it a lot more now. Sometimes you just don't realise the value of something until you lose/almost lose it. Of course I also think education is not for everyone...it depends on what you have a passion for. It's somewhat ironic that the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is part of this, since Bill himself dropped out of university and got successful anyway. But I still strongly believe every child should have the right to education. The choice is up to the individual though.
Anyhow, there's not much to be done for this campaign because it's based in America. Except to raise awareness. But if you stay in America and you know about this, then you CAN do something!
Next, the Campaign for Real Beauty, by Dove (also something I found out about from Oprah). Also another issue close to my heart. I wish that the me who was younger knew that true beauty was beyond the physical. There's a short film on the website's starting page that's really amazing; it shows you how a relatively plain-looking girl (complete with blemishes) is transformed, first by hair and make-up, followed by photo-shopping (which really changes her features quite drastically, elongating her neck, slimming her face, and enlarging her eyes).
I'm glad to be where I am now though. Not by anything the world has told me but because I've learnt that God loves me just the way I am. And that when I look upon Him, His glory envelopes me and makes me beautiful inside and out. For those who don't know this (YET), at least now they have a voice! |
